Hyderabad: Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad is hosting the first ever international conference on Carbon Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) to be held in India between December 5-7. This conference is meant to unify the researchers from across the globe working on carbon-based MEMS.

The Conference will provide a boost to research in pushing the Carbon-MEMS frontiers in the areas of healthcare, extreme point-of care diagnostics, energy storage and energy harvesting, sensors and resonators, among others. The objective of the conference is to bring researchers in this field under an umbrella to explore possible collaborations, come up with joint proposals and enable exchange of students to explore new horizons.

Delivering the Chief Guest Address through video conference, Prof. Ashutosh Sharma, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, said, “All participants should take this opportunity to establish new relationships for future collaboration and strengthen the existing ones. He emphasized on the need to explore the role of novel advance carbon materials and their emerging applications in all walks of life: energy, environment, healthcare and sensors.”

About 78 participants including 18 international delegates from the U.S., Germany, Denmark, China, Mexico, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Vietnam, Switzerland, UK, Italy, Spain and India are taking part. This is the fourth International Carbon MEMS Conference. The first worldwide meeting was initiated as the International Carbon Ring in the University of California, Irvine in 2013, followed by 2015 and 2016 conferences also in the U.S.

Addressing the gathering, Prof U.B. Desai, Director, IIT Hyderabad, said, “I look forward to International collaborations and research opportunities for IIT Hyderabad student’s welfare. In coming days, I will be meeting foreign delegates attending this conference and will discuss about possible research collaboration.
