Hyderabad: Professor Harald Zur Hausen, Nobel Laureate from Germany would deliver a lecture on ‘Cancers with epidemiological evidence for a linkage to infections’ at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) here on February 18 .

This is the second in the Hyderabad Lecture Series, started a few months ago. Dr Venki Ramakrishnan, another Nobel Laureate from UK, has delivered the first one earlier.
Prof. Hausen won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the year 2008 for his discovery of human papilloma viruses causing cervical cancer.
In 1977, Prof. Zur Hausen was appointed as Chairman of the Institute of Virology of the University of Freiburg, Germany, where he continued his studies on human papillomaviruses (HPV).
His group identified the two most frequent HPV types in cervical cancer tumours. The group then characterised them and established the mechanism of HPV-mediated carcinogenesis which led to the development of a preventive vaccine later. This work eventually led to the award of the Nobel Prize for him in 2008.
