Hyderabad: The English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) students are crying foul as the university allegedly scraped their stipends. The students said university earlier gave stipends and book allowance based on economic status irrespective of a student’s merit. However in the latest announcement, the university gave stipends and book allowance to only students who have merit, they alleged.

Students said with the current decision of the university it has violated its own prospectus and spirit of Constitution in not encouraging students from economically backward communities. “The administration has converted the regular stipend based on economy into a merit-oriented stipend. We demand administration to reinstate the earlier policy of stipend based on economical backwardness of students and has submitted a letter with almost 1000 signatures,” said a member of Telangana Students Association, who requested not be quoted.

A student, on the condition of anonymity, said the decision of the university would create financial burden on economically poor students. “Several students will be forced to leave courses in the midway with the decision of the university,” students added. They said they took a signature campaign against the university decision and submitted a letter to university Registrar on Wednesday.

“We have submitted a letter to the university Registrar to reinstate the earlier policy. If varsity does not roll back its decision several students career will be in the dark,” said a research scholar. The university officials were unavailable for a comment over the issue.
