Here are some things you should be getting from your first employer.

Role induction

It’s your right to be trained for the job role. The training intensity and the time frame of your project vary from company to company. Some provide exhaustive training while others provide you limited scope. It’s your responsibility to get the best out of your training period.

Performance expectation

It is the employer’s responsibility to give you a performance appraisal. The Key Result Areas (KRAs) and Key Performance Indices (KPIs) must be explained to you.

Resource allocation

Your employer should provide you with the basic resources required for your job. If you need a laptop or a two wheeler, expect the employer to provide you with them.

Opportunity to learn and contribute

You should be given a chance to contribute and learn in your job. It will consume a lot of your time but is definitely worth it. For instance, the company may conduct 'computer classes' on 'Advanced Excel Programming'. You should be allowed to participate. But if training sessions are held during holidays, be ready to forgo your weekends.

No penalty for mistakes

It is not always possible to put your best foot forward on your first job. The employer should not punish you for first mistakes. There is a difference between mistake and carelessness. You cannot expect your employer to tolerate your carelessness. Also, mistakes cannot be repeated and you must learn from them.

Challenges and strict targets

Your first job is the foundation of your career. Expect it to be the toughest job you will undertake. Career performances matter, that will help you succeed in your later jobs. As you are young and open to learning, it is the best time to put in extra long hours at work.
