Professional colleges must imbibe Skills India, get finishing skills into curriculum” Lauding PM’s Skills India initiative, HR firm CEO, makes urgent call for increasing employability. “There is no doubt that the Skills India endeavour of the Govt. of India, will be a game changer for the country, & is sure to make India the HR capital for the world.

The scale and size of this initiative is unprecedented – the target is to skill about 40 crore of the country’s’ youth by the year by 2022. In this year alone, the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) will endeavour to skill about 24 Lakhs youth”, Mr D Venkat, CEO, Strides HR Consulting said today.

He added - “However, from a HR & industry hiring perspective, this is also a huge wake-up call for professional/other colleges – given the alarmingly low level of employability amongst the graduates passing out from various professional courses.

Unless there is a highly focused and time bound finishing skills initiatives, the professional colleges will just turn out to be degree factories, with almost no employment for a majority of the pass-out – not for lack of employment, but lack of employable skills.” “Like the curriculum designed for the Skills India initiative, colleges must collaborate with university authorities and academia and devise result oriented short term skills development course and impart it into the curriculum.

Only this will reverse the dropping rate of employability – which as per a few surveys of the past years has been as low as 5% for graduates passing out of colleges in Tamil Nadu”. Mr. Venkat also pointed out that various attempts at improving employability of graduates through industry – academia collaborations have met with limited or no success.
