Gurgaon: “Let us give the children space to think and act as values can never be taught. It needs to be enhanced by educators and parents through positive role modeling,” said noted psychologist and alchemist Dr Aruna Broota, while addressing the schoolchildren at Suncity World School here on Thursday.

It was a remembering day for the students (class-III to X) of Suncity World School – when they chanced to have as many as four different sessions with globally revered mental health expert Dr Aruna Broota.

In the first session on ‘Good Touch, Bad Touch’, she interacted with the children and asked them to share their experiences and those experiences. She also explained the children what is an appropriate touch and what is not. “Girls and boys we are all equal. We should learn to live with each other. We should not bully each other, rather we need to learn to respect each other,” she said, adding, “Even when we are expressing our emotions like happiness, anger or annoyance – we should refrain from touching each other – as we land up touching the other person in a wrong place.”

In the next session on ‘Being respectful and choosing words carefully’, Dr Broota laid stress on being humble and disciplined. “Speech is the index of mind, so one must be careful before articulating,” she said, adding, “When you use abusive language for others it does not impact the other person however it impacts you and your system. Those who abuse are the weakest person. Studies have shown that your memory comes down and circulatory system leads to emotional imbalance.”

In the penultimate session on ‘Gender Sensitization’, the noted people-transformation expert asked about the cause of behaving to the other gender differently. “Both boys and girls have different characteristics and we need to understand each other. It's important we learn to respect each other, which is called gender equality,” she said. She also condemned the approach of teaching the boys and girls differently. “There are gender advantages to both men and women, but they are complimentary to each other. Let's not disregard the opposite gender. When we talk of equality we should talk about equal opportunity,” she added.

In the last session on ‘Tackling distraction’, Dr Broota said that violence, hatred, anger, mistrust and apathy are nothing but a reflection of our minds in unrest. “With stress levels at an all time high, given the current trends in lifestyle, it is no wonder that the repressed stress in individuals finds vent in society at large. All of us want the society to change, to become more peaceful, yet none of us wants to be the agent of that change, she said, adding, “We need to understand that each one of us can bring about a positive change in society. We must become the change we want to see in the world. Even a small gesture of public service like cleaning your community area can have great positive impact on your well being. Someone else who understands this will try to make your life better too! Sit up, take action and set a positive example.”

Sharing her experience Ananya, student of Suncity World School said " It was a wonderful experience, I really enjoyed the sessions. Although I was little hesitant to share my experiences at first however Aruna mam made us very comfortable. I am going back with lot of learning and I will surely put all the lessons in practice which I have got today."

Meanwhile, thanking Dr Broota for taking for consecutive sessions for the students, Suncity World School Principal Ms Rupa Chakravarty said that such lectures could make substantial positive changes in the career of students. “It was really very informative. Contrary to their habit, the kids remain spellbound despite the consecutive sessions. I think the schools must conduct such motivational sessions regularly,” she said.
