Drought stares at Warangal
With poor monsoon last season drought-like situation is prevailing dealing a blow to Warangal farmers who are already burdened by a discouraging kharif season bringing the land under cultivation by half in the district. Cultivation of paddy continues to be the most-affected activity due to the poor rainfall.

Warangal: With poor monsoon last season drought-like situation is prevailing dealing a blow to Warangal farmers who are already burdened by a discouraging kharif season bringing the land under cultivation by half in the district. Cultivation of paddy continues to be the most-affected activity due to the poor rainfall. The average rainfall that was expected to have registered in the district as on January 5, 2015 is 919.5 mm whereas the rainfall registered was only 623.5 mm making it a deficit of 32 per cent. As a result, sowing is reduced by 30 per cent, against the expected area.
Due to deficit rainfall, precarious power situation and depleting groundwater, sowing fell by almost one lakh hectares this rabi season. According to the Agriculture Department, the area that was sown so far stood at 55,720 hectares, against the sowing of 1,55,331 hectares of normal sowing area during the rabi season.
The kharif too witnessed a shortfall in the acreage. Cultivation was taken up in 4,39,815 hectares as against the normal 5,02,132 hectares. As a result, cumulatively the district witnessed a huge drop in paddy production in an extent of 1,19,351 hectares, 47,035 hectares in kharif and 72,316 hectares. This amounts to almost 50 per cent.
The prevailing drought-like conditions have come to fore during Monday’s Zilla Parishad General Body meeting which was attended by Deputy Chief Minister T Rajaiah. The meeting has passed a unanimous resolution that Warangal district be declared as the drought-affected by the government.
