Summers are cruel to all alike, but birds and stray animals find it harder to survive the heat without shade or water to quench their thirst.

Birds fly for miles to get to a water body and many die before they get any closer.

Stray animals are no different, in the winters they struggle for food and in summers, water!

Though it might not be possible to provide water and food to all the stray animals and birds, but it is well within our reach to make a difference!

Many people keep an earthen bowl of water in their balconies or terrace, scatter bajra (millet) or rice for their tiny little guests to feast on. And a lot of good souls even feed the strays on a regular basis. But a higher and collective initiative is needed to help these animals and birds to co-exist with us.

Recently, a Surat based animal welfare organisation launched a new mobile application for people who are ready to help.

The application, 'The Bird Tap', which is an initiative by animal welfare organisation, Prayas Team Environment Charitable Trust in collaboration with NGO Humane Society International(HSI), India, that aims to provide respite to thousands of thirsty birds and street animals from the scorching summer heat.

With the help of the application one can locate the water bowls distributed across the city and fill it on a regular basis apart from adding a lot more bowls in the area which is mapped by the app.

"This application will not only help us manage the distribution of pots, but also enable Surat netizens to locate water bowls distributed in different parts of the city and refill them regularly," Darshan Desai, president of Prayas Team, said.

Desai added that the target was to have a water pot "mapped" so that "no bird in the city has to fly more than 100 meters in search of water".

The Android-based app will help people, once they register, to find the nearest team Prayas centre from where they can get the pot free of cost.
