Former pcc chief D Srinivas' presence and Botcha's absence raise speculations of change of guard
Hyderabad: Kesiraju Srinivas, popularly known as Ghazal Srinivas, joined Congress party on Sunday. That may not be of very high importance, but what has raised eyebrows in the Congress circles is that Srinivas joined the party in the presence of former PCC president D Srinivas instead of PCC president Botcha Satyanaryana. This led to speculations over the impending change of guard of the PCC.
It may be recalled that D Srinivas had indicated to the party high command, that he was willing to take up the responsibility of leading the party during the 2014 polls. The AICC, at its Jaipur conclave in January, resolved to strictly implement 'one man, one post'. This fuelled speculation that Botcha Satyanarayana who is also the Transport Minister will be be asked to choose either of the two posts.
Party leaders claimed that the high command had given the senior leaders enough hints that it would take some 'hard decisions' for the strengthening of the party and if needed the State Congress would be revamped soon after May 21, which happens to be the death anniversary of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. It was also being said that Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy was also in favour of having a PCC president from the Telangana region, since there was a feeling within the party that all top positions in the State were being held by leaders from Seemandhra region.
However when asked about it, D Srinivas told the media not to read too much into the issue as it was just coincidental that Botcha was not present. "The PCC president is not in Hyderabad and we have taken his permission before admitting Ghazal Srinivas into the party," he added.
Ghazal Srinivas said that he had chosen May 12 to join the 127-year-old party, as Sunday was an auspicious day. He further said that he would not be seeking any seat and was not interested in contesting the polls, but would use his popularity among people to strengthen the Congress in the run-up to 2014 polls.
He said, "In fact, for me Congress is my home. My grandfather Kesiraju Venkata Narasimham Panthulu was in the Congress during the freedom movement."
