Chief Minister's flagship scheme comes into being Hyderabad: Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Friday announced that for the effective implementation of 'Bangaru Thalli' scheme, government will make public the total number of girl children benefitted under the scheme at annual programme being organised on May 1 every year. Kiran Kumar Launching the government's flagship programme here, he said that the scheme got statutory status through an enactment in the Assembly, recently, under which the scheme should be continued forever. No government has the power to scrap the scheme. May 1 will be observed as 'auspicious' day for girl child for whom the scheme was launched on the same day this year. About 20,000 girl children had already been enrolled under the scheme and got Rs 2,500 cash benefit as first instalment. Girl children born through institutional deliveries were only eligible to avail the benefits of the scheme. Stating that over one crore girl children were killed in the last 20 years in the country, Reddy said in the state alone 70,000 deaths (including neonatal, premature and abortions) were reported between 2005 and 11. The worrying factor was the sex ratio is declining with the increasing deaths. " Nobody has right to kill them. It is shameful and against the society", he added. Though many laws existed for girl protection , the Chief Minister said the scheme was launched aiming to develop girls socially and economically and also relieve the families from the burden of nurturing them. Government will provide free education up to graduation and Rs one lakh will be given to every beneficiary after they attain 21 years. Observing that the literacy rate among women in state was less than national average, Reddy said the scheme was a boon for girls. "We want to bring change in every woman's life through the scheme and achieve gender equality." CM also said to reduce maternal mortality rate, government increased the bed capacity from 200 to 1,000 in the government hospitals to provide better medical facilities. Another scheme 'Indiramma Amrtiha Hastam 'was also launched to provide nutritional food to needy pregnant women. He said a record was created by his government by giving statutory status to two important scheme � Bangaru Thalli and SC and ST Sub -plans. State Women Development and Child Welfare Minister Sunitha Laxma Redy said the Bangaru Thalli will provide security to girls and definitely bring a major change in the society.
