Highlights

First thing that comes to your mind when you hear of Vietnamese food is Pho, Spring rolls & Banh’ mi. During my travels to the south east, I’ve had my tryst with Vietnamese cuisine and I love the fact that this particular cuisine is known for the use of fresh ingredients, minimal use of oil & is mostly relied on the herbs and vegetables.

It was nice to have relished this “feel-good” cuisine once again at the ongoing “Vividly Vietnamese” promotion at Seasonal Tastes – Westin as part of the bloggers table. Seasonal Tastes in itself is popular for its wide range of Global cuisine options, the buffet spread in particular highlights the Vietnamese delicacies as part of the spread.

I must have visited seasonal tastes ample times but this time I Ignored the entire spread and made sure to try just the Vietnamese delicacies.

Chef Nguyen Hung Thong, Sous Chef at Sheraton Hanoi took us through the nuances of the flavors and intricacies of Vietnamese cuisine. Started off with an interactive cooking session of the popular Vietnamese “Pho”- A noodle soup with whole chicken, rice noodles, chicken bones, spring onions, coriander and various other spices made this super delicious The cold & salad section featured some interesting veg & non-veg salads of which Banana Blossom & Shredded chicken salad was the first one, the combination of banana flower, bean sprout chili, lime juice & chicken infused with fish sauce was balanced in its flavors.
The sesame flavored Vermicelli along with vegetables & Seafood was my pick among the non-veg cold salads. From the veg section the Shredded Green Mango Salad with spearmint was the star, it had striking similarity with the raw papaya salad. Loved it!

Topping the list of favorites among the cold & salads section was Vietnamese Spring Rolls with Vegetable, Herbs & Shrimps, and finely chopped vegetables of carrot, onion, noodle & coriander rolled into Rice Paper and served with dipping sauce was just oo good. The Mains included Grilled Duck with Galangal, although this way good in its own way I felt the turmeric flavor was more dominating than galangal. The steamed fish in soya & Deep fried tofu curd with eggplant was super good. While I skipped the Vietnamese style wok fried vegetable noodles, I was more inclined towards the steamed station and Wok Station. Tried the assorted platter of steamed meats which included chicken, fish and prawns. Loved it!

The desserts featured few interesting options of which Chilled Longan & Lotus seeds in sugar syrup was my favorite – this had striking similarity to the water chestnut that you find in Thai cuisine. The Traditional Green Bean Cake with its small cubes of surprises would just burst into your mouth – Loved it!

The ginger & caramel flavored sticky rice cake was just a passé while the Fruit candies brought from Vietnam was good enough. Vietnamese food is aromatic and the flavors are subtle that will tease your taste buds. The best part about a Vietnamese meal is that it is wholesome, healthy and light. Kudus to Chef Nguyen Hung Thong for coming up with this promotion. With its aromatic and yet subtle flavors, Vietnamese Cuisine will definitely tease your taste buds. The promotion is on until 23rd of August and priced approximately around Rs 1400 – Rs 1600 /-
