GHMC Commissioner Somesh Kumar was appointed District Election Officer (DEO) for Hyderabad district on Thursday. The civic chief conducted a meeting with all the returning officers and assistant returning officers after his appointment. During the meeting it was pointed out that there were three pressing issues that needed to be clarified before the polling booths could be confirmed.

The issues were:
1. A few polling stations were located on the first floor, which was against the Supreme Court orders that all polling stations must be accessible to the physically handicapped.
2. A few Madrasas were chosen as polling booths. Considering the fact that Madrasas are Muslim educational institutions, it would be biased against voters.
3. Easy access to polling stations within the limits. Polling stations are more than 2 km away from residential areas.
These queries were sent to the Chief Electoral Officer for clarification, but the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) still has not received any response till date.
Dual role for GHMC Commissioner
Now the civic chief would have to play a dual role for as long as the elections go on. Speaking to the Hyderabad Hans, he said, “The decision to make me the DEO came straight from the Government of India. There would surely be excess work, but we would handle it.” He added that high on his priority list were completion of the voters’ lists and polling station verifications by the end of March.
Somesh explained that close to 50,000 staff would be required for all the polling booths and that the process of appointing them had already begun.
