Hyderabad: Stung by the failure of the TPCC to utilise the meetings addressed by Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in Telangana, the AICC general secretary in-charge of state affairs, Digvijay Singh, is being deputed to Hyderabad to galvanise party rank and file and ensure the campaign is put in fast-forward mode. Digvijay will supervise arrangements and crowd mobilisation for the meetings to be addressed by Rahul Gandhi in Warangal and at L B Stadium in Hyderabad on Friday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s meeting in Bhongir on Saturday and Sonia Gandhi’s public meeting at Medak on Sunday. The party high command is said to be of the view that the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee had failed to reach out to the people, claiming full credit for carving out the separate T State.
Though the party candidates are campaigning in their respective constituencies, so far top leaders have not held a joint public meeting or road show. While KCR has been going on a whirlwind tour, covering about 10 constituencies every day, the Congress party has not been able to take off yet. Even TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu has visited the region more than once so far and on Wednesday announced the CM candidate as well. Against the backdrop of this scenario, the visit of Digvijay Singh ahead of the three meetings assumes importance.
According to Congress sources, Bhongir has been chosen as the venue for Prime Minister’s meeting since it is the second place from where Sonia Gandhi had stated that the Congress had no objection to creation of separate Telangana State. Singh is expected to explain the problems the Congress had faced in introducing the T Bill in Parliament and how it ensured its passage, despite knowing well that it would face an uphill task in the residuary state. The party leaders have been asked to mobilise about two lakh people. Meanwhile, Congress chief spokesman D Shravan said Nalgonda district is a stronghold of the Congress party. It is the second district where the Telangana Rashtra Samiti drew blank in 2009 election, he said. He said that of the 12 Assembly segments, the Congress won seven seats, while three went to TDP and two were won by left parties.
