Centrally Sponsored Scheme of “National Mission on Medicinal Plants” primarily aimed at supporting cultivation of medicinal plants on private land with backwards linkages for establishment of nurseries, for supply of quality planting material and forward linkages for postharvest management etc.

The Botanical Survey of India (BSI), an organization under Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change, Government of India has been carrying out survey and documentation of all plant resources of the country including medicinal/aromatic plants and herbs. As per BSI estimate more than 8,000 species of medicinal herbs and medicinal plants are found in the country.

Since 2014-15, the Scheme is being implemented as “Medicinal Plants” component under National AYUSH Mission (NAM) Scheme of Ministry of AYUSH. Presently, under the scheme, cultivation / farming of 140 prioritized medicinal plants species are being supported by NMPB.

The Ministry of AYUSH was formed on 9th November' 2014. Earlier it was known as the Department of Indian System of Medicine and Homeopathy (ISM&H) which was created in March 1995 and renamed as Department of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) in November 2003, with a view to provide focused attention for the development of Education and Research in Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy.

Objectives of the AYUSH are: To upgrade the educational standards of Indian Systems of Medicines and Homoeopathy colleges in the country; To strengthen existing research institutions and to ensure a time-bound research programme on identified diseases for which these systems have an effective treatment;

To draw up schemes for promotion, cultivation and regeneration of medicinal plants used in these systems; and to evolve Pharmacopoeial standards for Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy drugs.

The National AYUSH Mission encompasses core /essential activities on AYUSH Hospitals and Dispensaries services, development of AYUSH Educational Institutions covering under Graduate and Post Graduate educational institutes, ASU&H drugs quality control covering State Government ASU & HPharmacies, State Drugs Testing Laboratories, drugs control framework and promotion of Medicinal Plants.

The mission also has provision for 20% of financial resources for flexible components to be proposed by the State/UT governments. The resource allocation to the States/UTs is proposed on the basis of population, backwardness and performance of the State/UT. This will ensure a predictable and balanced allocation to the States taking into account equity, performance and backwardness.
