Mohammed Majid Hussain, Mayor of Hyderabad, formally inaugurated the GHMC summer coaching camps -- 2014 at Victory Play Ground, Chaderghat, on Thursday. Addressing the gathering he said that Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is committed to establish a stadium and a swimming pool in each of the 24 constituencies under the GHMC’s jurisdiction.The regular summer coaching camps this year has been delayed due to election model code of conduct. The camps will run till June 10.

“I urge the young sportsmen to utilise the facilities being provided by the GHMC. Experienced coaches from state sports associations will coach young boys and girls at the summer camps,” he said. He hoped that trainees of Indian Sepaktakraw team, who are undergoing training in Victory Playground indoor stadium, are able to avail the best facilities, provided free of cost. “TheGHMC is committed to make the city as a sports hub,” he added.

Somesh Kumar, Commissioner, in his presidential address, expressed his gratitude to the coaches for their u stinted efforts. Since the camps have started a bit late, he urged the coaches to conduct special classes between 5 pm and 7 pm, apart from regular training in the morning.

“This year the GHMC has introduced a new sport called “Mini Foot Ball”, apart from regular 54 games and sports. We are spending around Rs 80 lakh for the coaching camps and Rs 31 crore have been allocated for overall development of infrastructure for sports activities,” he added. Somesh Kumar informed that in order to benefit the players, they have introduced a scholarship scheme. “Rs 5,000, Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,000 worth scholarships will be given to players from the coaching camps, who have participated in international tournaments, national championships and state level events, respectively,” he added. He added that they are proposing to organise a meeting with eminent sportsmen and coaches from the city to elicit their suggestions and ideas on sporting activities, so that the benefits may pass on to upcoming players. Nearly 3,000 children have taken part in the inaugural march-past. Breath-taking martial arts display by the students was indeed a treat to the eye.
