In a bizarre incident that came to light late on Thursday, India and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni led his entire team out of the five-star hotel on Tuesday after the hotel authorities dissuaded them from consuming home-cooked biryani inside the hotel.

The CSK team was in the city to play the business end of the ongoing Champions League T20 tournament against Kolkata Knight Riders on Wednesday. According to reports, Dhoni’s Indian team-mate Ambati Rayudu, who was then at Raipur playing for Mumbai Indians, made the arrangements to send home-cooked biryani to the hotel.

Grand Kakatiya, where the team was staying, has strict rules against consumption of outside food in the hotel premises. A source from the hotel stated that the management was willing to relent a bit and let the players partake the biryani in their rooms, but Dhoni was adamant on using the board room. That's when the hotel put its foot down.

Dhoni, furious at the staff of Grand Kakatiya for refusal, immediately made the team management cancel the booking and moved the team to Taj Krishna. Not only the team members, but the support staff and employees of India Cements (owners of CSK) moved to Taj Krishna.

The Grand Kakatiya staff later confirmed that the Chennai Super Kings moved out on Tuesday afternoon, but they refused to reveal the reasons for the team doing so.

"You should ask the Chennai team management on what had happened and why they vacated," said Suhasini, a member of the hotel's public relations staff.

"We're a five-star deluxe facility and there are five other such hotels in the city. One is free to pick one's place of stay," said George Verghese, the general manager of the hotel.

Sources in the CSK team maintained that the team wasn’t happy with the accommodation and food served at Grand Kakatiya and hence they shifted to Taj Krishna.

CSK spokesperson was quoted stating that the team was not happy with the hotel.

Sources from Taj Krishna, however, recall a different story altogether. “We were told that the food at that hotel was bad and the team had to get food from outside. This prompted the team to shift the hotel,” the source said.
