Christmas bells started ringing in Guntur exactly a month before on November 25, the day the Christian community heralds the advent of the holiday season by celebrating ‘Suppose Christmas’. During the past one week, illuminated stars started dotting the horizon of the city which has large Christian population. A festive atmosphere has filled the city with traders displaying multiple designs of illuminated stars outside their shop premises attracting passers-by and the Christian folk who are purchasing stars which symbolises the announcement of the birth of Jesus Christ. Churches in the city have already spruced up their interiors and exteriors with bright colours. Young carol bands are practicing for the carol rounds which will start anytime after the second week of December. For the general public, it is a musical feast as all the main fares in the city are spotted with churches where people are practicing carols in zest.

As part of the advent of Christmas season and celebrations, ‘J 127 Orphan Initiative’ Children’s Club have resorted to fancy dresses and playing of skits depicting the life of Jesus Christ and re-enacting some of the scenes described in the Bible. Some of the skits and fancy dresses of children include Jesus coming to the rescue of a prostitute woman who was about to be stoned by the general public. His observation, “He who has no sin first cast a stone at her” prompts all of them to drop their stones and vanish from there. There are also scenes including Jesus raising a dead woman to life and an income tax commissioner who is short-statured to attract Jesus attention climbs a tree and finally after an encounter with Jesus experiences inner transformation and openly declares that he will not resort to bribery anymore.

Similarly one can find Jesus discoursing his disciples on a mountain top. Programme coordinator Anand Kumar Raju says that Christmas season instills in children a sense of unity and happiness by their participation and provides an opportunity to display their talent and creative skills besides giving orphan children, who are part of the clubs, a sense of belonging.
