Beautification of the city has gained prominence after Vijayawada was designated as the capital of residual Andhra Pradesh. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is keen on developing the city with emphasis on its beautification. There is immense scope for development of leisure activities in the city located on the bank of River Krishna, which helps give a big boost to tourism. A sum of Rs 1,500 crore has been earmarked for the development of the city and its beautification.

The Chief Minister has directed the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) authorities to focus on removal of encroachments on canal bunds and road margins as part of the city beautification project. The bunds of three major irrigation canals, which flow in the city, can be developed as major recreation spots.

The river front can also be developed as a hub of leisure activities, including boat rides, entertainment zones, waterfalls and laser shows. The irrigation department has already been asked to identify suitable locations for the development of recreation hubs and to take concrete measure to curb pollution of canals. The river front cleaning and its development will give a whole new look to the city.

After the Chief Minister’s surprise visit to several places in the city a few days ago, Mayor Koneru Sridhar and Municipal Commissioner C Hari Kiran have taken several measures to improve hygiene as Chandrababu Naidu expressed his displeasure over poor sanitation.

Emphasis has been laid on removal of garbage and weeds, desilting of drains and culverts and clearing of encroachments on the canal bunds. The Mayor and the Municipal Commissioner, who travelled in a boat, have studied the scope and measures to be taken for the development of canals as part of the beautification project.

The decision of beautifying the city is a first step towards the development of designated capital. A clean atmosphere should be created as part of the project. There is also a need to impart discipline in citizens to prevent them from littering streets and dumping garbage at open places and into canals. Only then the city will get the real stature of a State capital.
