Upgradation is the name of the game for the Vijayawada Police. After acquiring a fleet of brand new Ford vehicles, the City Police Commissionerate has introduced a remote controlled traffic signalling system to promote road safety. The system has been set up at traffic signals in Benz Circle on a pilot basis, one of the busiest places in the city where NH 5 and NH 9 intersect. If it yields good results in regulating vehicular traffic, the new system will be extended to all major traffic junctions in the city.

As per the system, the traffic constable manning the junction can manually operate traffic signals with a remote depending on the density of traffic from a particular direction at peak hours to avoid jams.

Generally, two-wheeler commuters have to wait for a long time at signals as its timings are preset. The traffic cop can now use his discretion to change the signals to ensure the smooth flow of traffic.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) TV Naga Raju said, “We are planning to extend the innovative signalling system at more places in the city after testing it for 10 days.”
