Seminar on ‘Telugu women writers’ begins at Stella
A two-day national seminar of the Department of Telugu of Maris Stella College began on Thursday. Deputy Speaker of Assembly Mandali Buddha Prasad and Kendra Sahitya Akademi winner Katyayani Vidmahe formally inaugurated the seminar on ‘Telugu Women Writers - Contemporary Political and Literary Trends’ at the college auditorium.
In her keynote address, Prof. Katyayani Vidmahe of Kakatiya University, Warangal, said, “Women were ignored in all aspects in the early period of the freedom struggle. In the 19th century, there were just 6 women writers against 600 men in the field of literature in the country, which was just 1 per cent. It was mainly because of the endeavour of freedom fighter and social reformer Kandukuri Veeresalingam Pantulu, that women got due prominence in the field of Telugu literature. Women writers highlighted family and social issues and discrimination through their writings. Despite initial criticism, the views expressed by women evoked good response from society, which ushered in a social change.”
Extolling the impact of women authors, Buddha Prasad said, “Politics and literature are interrelated and the influence of politics in literature is inevitable. The works by women have a visible impact on society and its growth. There are many eminent women writers in the country who are trying to eradicate gender discrimination, dowry system and other social evils through their writings.''
College principal Sr Rekha Mudartha said, “Seminars are the best way to present one’s ideas and they also serve as a platform for exchanging ideas to bring about a change. Department of Telugu is organising. This national seminar for the first time. I hope the department will achieve a big success in its initiative.” Telugu Department head P Usha said, “More than 100 Telugu professors and scholars from various States enrolled their names for the two-day event. The seminar will discuss `Women’s Movements in Telugu Land’, `Feminist Writings and Different Perspectives', ‘Telugu Women Writers – Feminism’, ‘Globalisation’ and other relevant topics. About 60 research papers on different topics will be presented during the seminar.”
A souvenir was released to mark the occasion. Veteran journalist C Raghavachari, District Writers’ Association secretary GV Purnachand, retired Hindi lecturer Venna Vallabha Rao and others were present at the event.
