Targeting students to shrink road accidents
Prabhuraj Kumar, who is sensitive to increasing road mishaps and precious loss of lives, is making efforts to bring down the road accidents to zero by educating pillon riders as well as four wheeler light and heavy vehicle drivers.
Road Transport Authority Deputy Transport Commissioner M Prabhuraj Kumar is taking keen interest in educating high school and college students on civic sense, road behaviour, safe driving, usage of safety devices, traffic rules and a host of issues relating to road safety on a continuous basis irrespective of the annual observance of Road Safety Week.
Prabhuraj Kumar, who is sensitive to increasing road mishaps and precious loss of lives, is making efforts to bring down the road accidents to zero by educating pillon riders as well as four wheeler light and heavy vehicle drivers. Ever since he took charge as the deputy transport commissioner in November 2014, he has unleashed a campaign against drunken driving and cellphone driving. Fastening of seat belts by car drivers and wearing helmets by pillon riders are also being advised as part of safe driving practices.
Speaking to 'Vijayawada Hans', Prabhuraj Kumar said that speed tracking machine is being used to track reckless motor vehicle drivers who drive beyond the permitted speed. He said that more breath analysers are being procured to detect those driving in an inebriated state.
“If young boys and girls at the school and college level are educated on the driving and road usage aspects, they would surely become responsible citizens and contribute to reduction in accidents,” he opined.
“Schools and colleges are being covered through campaigns and young boys and girls are evincing interest in the power point presentations which is impressing the youth,” Prabhuraj added.
On the increased pressure on roads by hundreds of new vehicles hitting the roads, particularly in the district emerging as the host of capital region, the deputy transport commissioner felt that the general public should opt for mass transportation instead of looking at individual vehicles as mere status symbols.
The deputy transport commissionerate located in the capital region has a huge shortage staff and there is 40 per cent of the seats are lying vacant. While the cadre strength is 121, it is running with a mere 77 employees. 46 vacancies in different positions are still lying vacant.
