Women empowerment through She Autos
The State government has come up with an innovative programme to make unemployed women in urban areas self-reliant. ‘She Autos’, which are meant to empower women from Self-Help Groups (SHG), are being implemented as a pilot project in the city.
The autos will be driven by SHG women to help ensure the safety of working women and college girls. If the pilot project is successful, 5 to 10 per cent of autos in the city will be run by women

Speaking to The Hans India, Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA) State Coordinator and Deputy Director Rajasekhar Reddy said that the Central Government had allocated Rs 100 crore for the innovative programme from the National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM).

“Under the first of its kind programme in the country, SHG women in the age group of 18 to 40 in the city will be given necessary training from the first week of March. The Urban Community Development Wing of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) will identify 400 beneficiaries. Tenders are being invited from the driving institutes to provide three-month free training to the women,” Reddy said.
“The institutes will also help the women get driving licences issued by the Road Transport Authority (RTA) after the successful completion of training in driving. Special classes will be conducted for the female beneficiaries on behaviour and attitude development to enable them to operate the auto services smoothly without feeling any discomfort. Personality development trainers will conduct the special classes,” he said.

“The beneficiaries have to bear 25 per cent of the auto cost. The remaining amount will be sanctioned as a loan for the beneficiaries by the SC, ST, BC and minority corporations. MEPMA will reimburse 7 per cent interest on the loan amount if the beneficiaries repay it within the stipulated time. If the pilot project is successful, 5 to 10 per cent of autos in the city will be run by women. The autos will also help ensure safety of working women and college girls,” the MEPMA deputy director added.
