Doctors of Manipal Hospitals performed a complicated surgery on a six-year-old boy, Kannedara Uday, and spared him the trouble of undergoing an amputation. Addressing newsmen on Wednesday, Dr Manohar Velury, plastic, cosmetic and reconstructive surgeon, said that Uday was brought to Manipal Hospitals six hours after meeting an accident.

“The boy suffered supracondylar fractures of the left humerus. A five cm blood clot formed in the major artery near the elbow. The proximal block in the artery with a delayed presentation was a major obstacle in performing the surgery. However, an orthopedic team first fixed the bones, followed by removal of the blood clot.

Ten days after the surgery, the blood flow in his left hand resumed. Uday is now undergoing physiotherapy to move his hand normally.” The conference was attended by the patient, the unit head Karthihaivelana and other members of the orthopedic team.
