Gannavaram Airport will be ready to handle international flights in couple of months said airport director M Raja Kishore. “Airports Authority of India has taken up renovation and expansion of the existing terminal at the airport and the works will be completed in two months,” noted M Raja Kishore.
Speaking to industrialists at a round table conference organised by the Andhra Chambers of Commerce and Industries Federation on Thursday, he said that the existing 1,100 square metres passenger terminal will be upgraded to 3,200 square metres. Raja Kishore added that they have added parking base for 14 planes including the existing parking base for two flights.
The authorities are also planning to expand vehicle parking for passengers and cabs, ATM centers, space for customs and immigration officials (if approved for government) and currency exchange facilities. The airport director felt that once the airport is renovated, night operations could begin. Presently only 23 flights are being operated during the day.
“A report has been sent to the AAI which will then be approved by the Central government for clearance on international operations during the night. We are currently busy with the existing facilities and staff with domestic operations during the day,” the airport director said. Security clearances too are being reviewed by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and will deploy additional staff as per the requirement to handle both the arrival and departure of passengers.
When asked about new operations, Raja Kishore said that several airline companies were conducting a study on passenger rush from the airport. “One of them, Turbo Megha Airline, of actor Ram Charan, has already sent a proposal to start their operations from Gannavaram Airport and the proposals are being considered by the government,” he said.
Referring to the airport expansion, Raja Kishore said that the revenue and the State Government were handling land acquisition. The AAI will go for expansion of the existing runway, once the land is given to the AAI. “The airport used to have 9,000 to 10,000 passengers per month till September and the number has now gone up to 40,000 to 45,000,” he added.
