The Public Health Leadership and Implementation Academy (PH-LEADER) for non-communicable diseases (NCDs), Emory University based in Atlanta, USA, has selected Dr B R Shamanna of the University of Hyderabad (UoH) to participate in the 2015-16 one-year mentored learning experience in public health leadership and implementation science.

Dr Shamanna who is an associate professor in the school of medical sciences, will be designated as a ‘PH-LEADER’ in this highly competitive programme sponsored by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH). The PH-LEADER offers a collaborative interdisciplinary professional development programme established to provide training in implementation sciences and leadership for public health professionals working in the field of NCDs in low and middle-income countries (LMIC).

The growth of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancers, and chronic lung and kidney diseases worldwide poses major challenges for LMIC health systems. This programme will develop the next generation of health professionals that can dynamically and creatively organise and deploy resources, plan and implement interventions, evaluate and develop policies, and provide leadership to strengthen their health systems.

During this unique training programme, mid-career health professionals and researchers will complete a three-week intensive course at a leading US university to develop skills in implementation and leadership development. Programme participants will have the opportunity to work with and learn from global experts in their areas of interest.

This programme will last for a period of eleven months, beginning in June and running through April 2016. Dr Shamanna’s commitments for this programme will include: participation in monthly webinars; to identify, develop, and implement a project with guidance from an in-country mentor; team projects with PH-LEADER peers and attend the three-week intensive short course at the Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University, from July 29 – August 14.
