Awareness sessions on vertigo disorder

About 10 per cent of adults suffer from vertigo while five per cent of children suffer with this hearing disorder paired with giddiness. It is a myth that giddiness is caused by low blood pressure and brain related issues; whereas 80 per cent of the occurrence is due to ear problems.To spread awareness and provide treatment for the disease, a specialised center has been established in State at Naveen ENT Hospital.

The center has updated equipment to treat peripheral and central vertigo besides machinery that can conduct Brain Stem Evoked Response Audiometric (BERA), Oto Acoustic Emissions (OTA), Echochg Electrocochleography (ECOCHG) and Vestibular Evoked Mayogenic Potentials (VEMP) tests to access and diagnose the levels of vertigo.

Dr R Naveen of Naveen ENT Hospital said that they are going to organise special awareness camps to educate people about vertigo. We will also have free medical tests every Tuesday for a month’s time. People can register their names by paying an amount of Rs 50 and undergo the tests for free at Sunrise Hospitals on Tuesdays from 9 am to 11 vam,” he added.

Speaking about the possible causes of the disease, Dr Naveen said that long exposures to TV sets and electronic gadgets are the most prominent ways children and youngsters get vertigo “Infections in the nose and brain related nerves are also potential carriers of vertigo,” he added.
