Association for Promoting Social Action (APSA), a community development organisation, observed the International Widows' Day at Padmarao Nagar on Tuesday to address the injustice faced by widows and their children. S Sreenivas Reddy, director of APSA, said, “259 million widows and over 585 million children suffer in silence worldwide. Over 115 million widows live in poverty struggling to survive on a day to day basis.

Many of these women and their children are malnourished, exposed to diseases, and are subjected to extreme forms of deprivation. Widows experience targeted murder, rape, prostitution, forced marriage, property theft, eviction, social isolation and physical abuse and are targeted for many sufferings.”

“We have resolved to check atrocities on widows in coordination with the police and likeminded NGOs, and demand for separate reservations for jobs and to give admission for children in schools. We will also appeal to the government to create a Widow Corporation to take care of their financial needs,” Sreenivas added.
