Work on the Moula Ali-Sanathnagar corridor is halted. Army wants Railways to compensate it with land for firing range

The defence authorities have objected to the MMTS Phase II work at the Moula Ali-Sanathnagar stretch causing stoppage of work. The defence authorities want the Indian Railways to settle the agreement dating back to 1983 first before works can proceed.

The four-km stretch was given to the Railways in 1983 when the line was first built. There was no extra land taken this time for the MMTS Phase II as present works are confined to doubling. A senior official of Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), the Indian Railways arm entrusted with the project, said that 40 per cent of the work has been completed.

The area of contention is just 4 km. The army wants a compensation of 900 acres. In 1983, the Railways laid a 23 km line between Moula Ali and Sanathnagar and took four kilometers of defence land close to Suchitra area. A senior officer of Army, on the condition of anonymity, said that the Indian Railways had agreed to compensate the Army with 900 acres elsewhere as the land that was given was a firing range.

At present only goods trains ply on the route. Once the doubling work is completed, people travelling in this stretch would be benefitted. As per the projections, the MMTS Phase II would cater to 3.5 to 5 lakh passengers. Negotiations between both the parties are going on and according to RVNL official, a decision is expected soon. A meeting is scheduled in New Delhi later this week.
