Guntur Zilla Parishad Chairperson Johny Moon is a charismatic leader in her own might. Hailing from the minority community and from the village of Kapumoru, her pet project was to promote rural education, particularly for women. As chairperson who is on the verge of completing a year in office, Johny Moon speaks to City Tab about her future plans and her achievements in the just concluding year.

In the talk, Johny Moon stated that the one thing that gave her satisfaction was the improvement of sanitation in schools and construction of two thousand toilets in 326 Zilla Parishad schools in the district. Moon’s dream project is to implement the Smart Schools project with the help of NRI's who were the alumni of the ZP schools.

A presentation for the same is being sent to the Telugu Association of North America (TANA) convention, scheduled to commence from July 2, so that sponsors could be raised for the schools adoption programme. The idea is to develop the schools’ infrastructure and to equip them academically by introducing education tools like computers.

“Corporate colleges and schools are being encouraged to adopt one high school and primary school each and take full responsibility to transform the respective on corporate lines, as part of their social responsibility. Also nutrition is top on the agenda in the form of mid-day meals which are of high quality,” the ZP chairperson observed.

Johny Moon says that she was able to ensure supply of quality food to children under mid-day meal scheme and would continue to do so. The ZP chairperson is also happy with the State government promising to introduce IIT coaching for municipality schools in the district.

It is to be noted that the chairperson has brought ZP from a deficit of Rs 11 crore to a surplus of Rs 20 crore in the just concluded 2014-15 fiscal. She regrets that over the years, central grants to panchayats and ZPs had been declining and the body is left with a pittance to undertake development works.
