Mukkamala Niharika, a 15-year-old girl who suffers from speech delay and brain dysfunction, has made the city proud as she is going to represent India in cycling at the Special Olympics World Games 2015 to be held at Los Angeles from July 25 to August 2.

Mukkamala Niharika, a 15-year-old girl who suffers from speech delay and brain dysfunction, has made the city proud as she is going to represent India in cycling at the Special Olympics World Games 2015 to be held at Los Angeles from July 25 to August 2. The Indian contingent for Special Olympics comprises 240 sportspersons and 60 coaches. She is the first cyclist selected from Andhra Pradesh for the special international event.

The girl who is pursuing Level B at Sai Prema, a centre for children with special needs of Ankit Charitable Trust, pedals cycle for a distance of 7 to 10 km every day as part of her rigorous practice session and does fitness exercises on every alternate day. Her father Sivaramakrishna is an ex-serviceman. A native of Tenali, he shifted his family to Vijayawada to attend to the special needs of his daughter.

Her mother Bhargavi said, Niharika was identified as a slow learner and immature when we brought her to Hyderabad from Delhi. She used to be alone as the special girl and was shunned by fellow children. We bought her a cycle at the age of 7.

She evinced keen interest in cycling and started enjoying it. After being admitted in Sai Prema, the the centre for children with special needs, Niharika was encouraged to pursue her interest with a specially designed bicycle. Niharika won two medals in cycling at the National Open Championship held at Bhopal in 2014.''

At a programme jointly organised by the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) and Krishna District Sports Development Authority at Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation (IGMC) Stadium on Wednesday, Niharika was felicitated for getting selected to represent India at the Special Olympics.

DSDO P Ramakrishna, SAAP representative B Hanumantha Rao, Special Olympics Bharat (SOB) area director C Rajasekhar, Sai Prema principal B Jhansi and others wished her success at the Special Olympics. Niharika who will leave for Los Angeles from Chennai on July 20, is confident of a good show at the Special Olympics. She is hopeful of bringing laurels to the country.
