I went by my gut feeling a decade back and today I am contended for having taken the decision that is bringing me immense job satisfaction. Keeping pace with what became a trend, I also jumped on to the broadcast media bandwagon after a decade’s active career in mainstream print media.

Today, I look back with satisfaction at the progress I have made, although my driving force for the remaining part of the journey will be the constant quest to be up there with the cream of commentators, particularly those not endowed with sports in their genes.’

Sudeer Mahavaadi

Indeed, the career shift has been worth it for the Hyderabad-based Manthani native, Sudeer Mahavaadi, who has worked in Nagpur and Hyderabad in various positions. If his father’s demise came as a shock, then an interview with Sachin Tendulkar for a vernacular daily was to be a major turning point on the professional front.

The then ESPN boss Shantanu Guha Ray, who was around at that time, offered him a job to report events in and around Hyderabad. ‘My journey with ESPN and Starsports began that way. It led to getting assignments from Doordarshan Hyderabad Kendra in 2004 where I began a fresh innings as a commentator in both Hindi and English for hockey with N Mukesh Kumar and Kishore Bhimani alongside.

‘Three years later, Neosports gave me a solid break in Telugu commentary in Bangkok. ESPN Mobile and Ten Sports followed and I, more or less, became a regular in the Telugu commentary box covering coveted championships, including 30 Tests and over 100 ODIs, ITF tourneys, IBL, KPL, National Polo, and National Games, to name a few. The latest is the 2015 cricket World Cup. I have enjoyed foraying into diverse disciplines, which also added to my own understanding of a multitude of events,” points out Sudeer.

The interviews that he cherishes for eternity include those of Sir Vivian Richards, G R Vishwanath, Viswanathan Anand, Prakash Padukone and Dhanraj Pillay. Sudeer is now all geared up for the commencement of the Starsports Pro Kabaddi League that gets underway on Saturday. The popular Kabaddi event, which has some biggies from Bollywood as franchisee co-owners, is also coming up with live Telugu commentary for which Sudeer will be one of three rendering the job.

A die-hard fan of singing legend Kishore Kumar, Sudeer enjoyed a successful programme on T News that was titled Gaatarahe and was his tribute to the singing maestro. The pressure of the job notwithstanding, he is apparently having a field day, albeit from behind the mike.
