Telangana has accounted for the second highest number of suicides among all states in 2014 according to latest data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). As per the records, 9,623 people committed suicide last year in the state. If we were to understand the psychology of people who commit suicide, they indulge in the act not to end their life, but the pain.

Not all suicides end in death; some are a loud cry for help. Pain is usually temporary. However, people open doors to suicide because of their inability to deal with it. Simple mood swings could alone drag people to commit suicide. Types of Suicide Many youngsters cannot deal with frustration or hurtful comments. This is ‘Impulsive Suicide’ where people usually don’t die except in a few rare cases. The main intention here is to gain attention and sympathy for their temporary disturbance.

Few suicides are because of psychotic disorders. This is called ‘Suicide Secondary to Psychiatric Disorders’. Severe stages of depression are generally the reason for this type of suicide. However, the person can be brought to a normal stage with proper medication and counselling. Some suicides are committed out of anger, irritation, mood swings, etc. This is called as ‘Revenge Suicide’. Being denied something or lack of selfcontrol results in an angry outburst, sometimes leading to suicide.

Some suicides are about sending a message to support a cause. This is ‘Altruistic Sucide’ where the person believes it to be for the welfare of others. Another is ‘Copy Cat Suicide’ where media plays an in- fluencing role. Repeated telecast of suicidal incidents by celebrities or common people leaves a negative impression that usually leads the audience to mimic similar activities.

Speaking on the reasons behind people committing sui- cides, Dr Prabhakar Korada, psychiatrist, opined, “Frustration and immature thinking are the basic reasons that force people to end their life.” “Severe stages of depression in people can also be dealt, where people are given treat- ment without their notice,” he concluded
