What started as a hobby has turned into an addiction for the members of Capital Cycling Club. The brainchild of Orthopaedic Professor Dr Koduri Satya Kumar, the club is growing in popularity by the day.

In the year 2014, Dr Koduri Satya Kumar along with friends set off on their cycles and soon many others followed. In October last year the Capital Cycling Club was officially onto the social networking page, which added the members to the club and got it to the fore.

Today, there are 133 active bikers and 900 plus followers on social media. A firm believer in keeping fit, Dr Koduri says that biking is the only alternative to swimming to shed weight and stay fit without hurting your knees.

The activity of the club is just as simple as going for a ride on bicycle in and around the city with enthusiastic cyclists. The members have designed a logo for the club and captioned it, ‘Get a Bike, Get a Life’ that promotes the well being and importance of practicing environment friendly activities once in a while.

The members of the club are aged between 15 and 45 meet up every day at a coffee shop in Tikkle Road by 5.30 am and decide on what route they should go on for cycling. On weekdays, they go about 25 to 30 kilometers and on weekends; they make sure to tour up to 100 kilometers.

They have a separate dress code of fluorescent blue, which is clearly visible for others on roads, especially on highways beside all the protective gear like helmet, riding gloves, knee pads and more.

On Indian made bicycle, one cannot cope with the 20 to 24 kilometer per hour speed. For beginners, we advise hybrid bikes which cost around Rs 14,500. Later, depending on their financial status, they can upgrade their bicycle.

The response was good and more than expected. We have more number of schoolchildren joining us. A 63-yearold senior citizen also recently joined the club. Women though have still not got onto the biking activity in large numbers. Peoples outlook has to change towards women, says Dr Koduri Satya Kumar.
