Hyderabad: It has been a bittersweet victory for the AIMIM in the GHMC elections. The pink party succeeded in making inroads in what has been so far considered to be impregnable bastion of AIMIM. The voting pattern in the old city points out the TRS nominees had put up spectacular performance in places like Malakpet, Akbarbagh, Dabeerpura and Jangamet.

The election results also points out at the impressive gains made by the TRS in the Majlis-dominated old city. In several divisions where the Majlis won, the TRS nominees came second. The pink party candidates put up a spectacular performance in Old Malakpet, Akbarbagh, Dabeerpura, Jangammet, Chandrayangutta and other traditional strongholds of the Majlis.

The TRS candidates missed the Jambagh seat by mere five votes to the Majlis and the Karwan seat by 573 votes. This shows the deep inroads made by the TRS in the old city. Political observers say that so far there has been no alternative to the MIM in old city area and hence MIM victory used to be a one-sided affair.

But now with an option available to them the anti-MIM votes have gone to TRS. It may be mentioned here that the MIM had never been part of the separate Telangana agitation and in fact opposed to it. Apart from this, even the Hindu voters in old city areas rallied behind the TRS. The TRS leaders say that because MIM has been a friendly party of the TRS, it had even changed some candidates on the advice of MIM.

If it had selected strong candidates, the TRS had every chance of winning at least couple of seats in the core MIM areas. However, there is a potential for the pink party to be an alternative for the MIM. Though AIMIM has succeeded in retaining its seats, it has lost the king maker’s position. The two-bedroom house and Shahdi Mubarak scheme of the TRS seems to have tilted the balance in favour of the ruling party.
