Hyderabad: Will the TRS offer Rajya Sabha seat to Union Minister for Urban Development M Venkaiah Naidu from Telangana? The pink party, buoyed with the success in the GHMC elections decimating the Opposition, wants to hit two birds in one stroke.

The party, which has strength to win one seat on its own, wants to ensure that there are no legal complications in getting the second candidate won with the votes of the MLAs and MLCs who have joined the party and also move closure to the Centre and ensure that the state gets necessary help from the Union government. The term of Venkaiah Naidu ends in June.

Naidu represents Karnataka in the Upper House. Political circles say that TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao hit upon this idea when he came to know that the Opposition parties, including the Congress, were working out a strategy to field a popular common candidate and seek disqualification of the MLAs who had quit the Congress and TDP on the grounds of violating the party whip.

In a sort of counter-move, the TRS felt that if it offered support to Venkaiah Naidu then those who defected from the TDP and Congress to TRS can vote in support of Naidu and will also not attract any action as they would not have violated the whip issued by the respective parties. While 10 TDP leaders joined the TRS, five MLAs from the Congress and two from the YSRCP migrated to the pink party.

It may be mentioned here that V Hanumantha Rao of the Congress and G Sudharani, who quit the TDP recently and joined the TRS, would be retiring. TRS has strength of 65 MLAs in the Assembly. It requires about 42 members to get one elected to the Rajya Sabha.

Telangana TDP president L Ramana said that the TDP on its own does not have required numbers to field a candidate. “It is too early to comment on speculations doing rounds in the political circles but nothing can be ruled out.”
