Project Nanhi Kali run by Naandi Foundation and KC Mahindra Education Trust (KCMET) is celebrating the International Women’s Day by showcasing five films of Late Smita Patil. The event titled ‘Smita Patil Retrospective’ was inaugurated at Prasad Laboratories on Saturday and Malayalam film ‘Chidambaram’ was screened on the inaugural day. The three-day event screened 'Bazaar', 'Umbartha' and 'Mirch Masala'.

Noted activist and actor Amala Akkineni was the guest of the honour. Also present at the event were Shaji N Karun, who is the first filmmaker to cinematograph Smita Patil in ‘Chidambaram’; Prakash Raj, actor, director and producer and Smita Patil's sister Anita Patil Deshmukh, a physician by training and a social researcher by passion, who is also the Executive Director of Mumbai-based NGO, Partners for Urban Knowledge Action and Research (PUKAR).

Hajiya, a young engineering student from Hyderabad who was a Nanhi Kali in her school shared her inspiring story with the audience and threw light on the many ways in which this project is changing lives. Initiated in 1998 by KCMET, Project Nanhi Kali was designed to help girls from underprivileged families to complete schooling by imparting academic, material and social support.

As of today, the project has over a lakh girls on its rolls in nine states of India. Naandi coordinators and community activists interact with young girls in different parts of India on an everyday basis rendering ineffective, pull factors like early marriage, trafficking and child labour that force many girls out of school midway. Naandi joined Project Nanhi Kali as an implementation partner in 2005.

The Hyderabad-based NGO has also launched version 2.0 of Project Nanhi Kali last year with its Nanhi Kali centres for adolescent girls. 25 centres are already running in different parts of the twin cities and the organisation intends to double its reach in Hyderabad and Secunderabad by March end this year with centres that make available safe and nurturing spaces for young girls, empowering them with additional skills necessary to lead a life of respect, dignity and self-reliance.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day Smita Patil’s much acclaimed and provocative film ‘Bhumika’ will be screened at the retrospective at 5 pm. Acclaimed filmmaker Shyam Benegal will grace the screening which will be followed by a discussion. Nagesh Kukunoor and Shriya Sharan will also be present at the screening. Smita Patil’s son Prateik Babbar, Satish Reddy, chairman, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories and board of director, Naandi Foundation will be present at the closing ceremony.
