With an objective to create an awareness about Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders Society of India (ARDSI), Hyderabad chapter, in association with Sloka School is conducting an exhibition on dementia titled ‘Remember Me’ at Daira Centre for Art and Culture from Sep 26 – 30.

Amulya R, Psychologist from ARDSI says, “It is a progressive, neurodegenerative and irreversible condition, which causes immense physical, emotional and financial burden to the entire dementia family unit. We have memory boxes, one box per patient wherein they can put their personal things so that by watching the box, they can remember moments from their past and we are displaying four such boxes at this exhibition.”

One needs creativity and support to make these memory boxes. “They were made with the help of their families because we kept patients and his /her family related things that will help the person of dementia to recollect their memories. Through this it triggers good memories from past be it a photograph, small locket and old jewelry, etc,” shares Amulya.

“Dementia can start at any age. There are many different types of dementia. Sometimes it is caused due to formation of the protein in brain called “tau” protein. First we make a ‘person centric’ plan and then meet the patient’s family and take all the information about the patient from their family.

We have activities for individuals based on their likes and dislikes, encouraging physical, intellectual and social stimulation,” she shared. The centre indulges the patients in various activities to help them cope with the disease.

“Everyday activities such as reading, walking, gardening, painting, bicycling, chatting with friends, listening to or engaging in music and cooking are proving highly beneficial in keeping the brain healthy.

Persons with dementia can spend the day at the centre where they will engage in individual and group activities including sensory stimulation therapy; music therapy; art therapy; physical and socially stimulating activities, etc.”
