Warangal: The pavement dwellers in the city had surprising guests during the cold mid-night hours of Tuesday, offering the much needed warmth to them.

A group of youngsters associated with social service organisation Sulakshya Seva Samithi based in the city have gone around the tri-cities of Warangal-Hanamkonda-Kazipet and donated blankets to the destitute, sleeping on pavements.

This they did as part of their objective providing basic needs to the homeless and poor.

Speaking on the occasion, founder-president of the samithi Santhosh Manduva has said that winter may seem romantic for those, who are well-to-do but those but for who are homeless and poor it is dreadful experience to face spine chilling cold as they cannot afford to have minimum protection from cold weather.

‘Keeping this in view, we have been educating and sensitising people on the plight of those without warm clothes in the winter.

The samithi has also been donating blankets to underprivileged children at different homes in Warangal since the past five years.’

So far more than 1,500 blankets, worth Rs 3 lakh have been distributed, he added.

Santhosh told The Hans India that since the last three days they have been visiting the poor and homeless and have donated nearly 100 blankets.

Few weeks ago, blankets were distributed to the needy sleeping on the roads in Hyderabad also.

‘The required funds are being raised through popular social networking site facebook and there has been a very good response from our friends.

Kakatiya University Registrar Prof MV Ranga Rao, Arjuna awardee Jammalamadaka Pitchaiah, famous Indian mimic Padma Shri Nerella Venumadhav, Telangana Gandhi Bhupathi Krishnamurthy and others joined us in our efforts,’ he added.

‘There is immense happiness in serving the needy,’ said the samithi members Aravind Arya Pakide, Revanth Mandala, Kaushik Bhupathi and others, who have taken part in the blanket donation.

They are now planning to donate nearly 100 blankets to children at orphanages during the next week.
