Sircilla: District Collector D Krishna Bhaskar on Tuesday advised the students to gift saplings to their near and dear ones for any occasion or celebration. The Collector participated in the World Forest Day celebrations, organised by the district Forest department, at the Social Welfare Girls’ Residential High School at Chinna Bonala village of Sircilla Rural mandal on Tuesday.

Addressing the students, the Collector said the sustenance of mankind was dependent on conservation of forests.“As per the National Forest Policy, there must be 33 per cent of forest cover in the State and the country. However, the indiscriminate felling of trees in the last 100 years has reduced the forest cover to only 24 per cent in the country and 24.35 per cent in the State,” the Collector said.

“It is our responsibility to increase the forest cover for which we must start a movement of planting saplings and taking care of them,” the Collector suggested.

Later, he handed over prizes to the students who won in essay writing, elocution and painting competitions organised by the Forest department on the day. Forest Ranger Venu Gopal, Section Officer Srinivas B Lakshmi, the school Principal Jaswalin and others took part in the celebrations.
