There is need to create more awareness among the people on the ill effects of child marriages to achieve 100 per cent results to prevent child marriages in the district, District Collector D Krishna Bhaskar observed.
Sircilla: There is need to create more awareness among the people on the ill effects of child marriages to achieve 100 per cent results to prevent child marriages in the district, District Collector D Krishna Bhaskar observed.
He chaired district-level coordination committee meeting to bring awareness on Prohibition of Child Marriage Act-2005 and on Registration of Marriage Act-2002, at Podupu Bhavan here on Tuesday. The Collector explained the ill effects of child marriages and the benefits women would get if the marriage is registered to the committee members.
Despite an Act prohibiting child marriage, it is very sad that even today the child marriages are being performed in several places. Telangana stands first in position in the lowest marriageable age of girls that is 18 years compared to other states in the country.
One can understand the seriousness of the problem if the average age of girls getting married in Telangana is 19 years, he stated. ‘Until and unless there is a change in the people mindset to fight back on the social evil of child marriage, implementing the government laws, we cannot achieve 100 per cent results in prohibiting child marriages in the society,’ the Collector said.
Many government schemes will be applicable for the family if the marriages are registered along with getting security for women with several benefits. All the priests, who performs the weddings, must take initiation for registering the marriages as soon as the wedding is over by motivating the newly married couple along with extending their cooperation and support for prohibiting the child marriages, suggested the Collector.
Joint Collector Yasmine Basha said that it is sad to know that not even single person was punished, who were involved in child marriages till date. There is an urgent need to create awareness among people on child marriages to prevent the social evil.
The village secretaries of respective villages will be given the responsibility of registering the marriages within ten days, she added. Later the Collector released posters and pamphlets to bring awareness among people on the ill effects of child marriages and advantages on registering the marriages.
District Welfare Officer M Saraswathi, District Revenue Officer Shyam Lal Prasad, Rural Development Officer Panduranga and Sub-registrar were also present along with others.
