Completion of Mission Bhagiratha works before deadline

Luxettipet: Though the officials have been executing the works of laying drinking water pipelines in 41 habitats in the mandal on a war-footing, under Mission Bhagiratha scheme at a cost of Rs 19.36 crore, the villagers doubt they could not get drinking water supply during the current summer season.

To provide drinking water from River Godavari under the scheme, the officials planned to construct 18 tanks. They held a meeting with village sarpancehs and officials of various government departments to overcome problems while executing Mission Bhagiratha works.

The internal pipeline laying works in Talamala, Nayakapuguda, Manneguda, Gullakota, Suraram and Pochampalli villages of Jenda Venkatapur panchayat were completed. Of the 18 water tanks proposed, nine were completed and the delay was attributed to the negligence of the contractor in executing the works.

The contract was given to Koya Constructions, which had sub-contracted the works to another firm. As the firm, which got the sub-contract, is not keen to execute the works, the officials are completing the works done with the help of local contractors.

It seems that it is doubtful to meet the deadline of supplying drinking water by the last week of May, as there is no scope of supplying water to at least half of the habitats by the deadline.

It is also not possible to supply drinking water to agency villages of Challampeta, Talamala and Manneguda, located at higher altitude. Unless an intermediate pumping station is located, supplying drinking water to these villages is doubtful.

A resident of Talamala, Nooru said that there will be no problem in bringing water up to Rampeta. But getting water from there to Challampeta is a herculean task since Challampeta is located at a higher altitude.

Unless officials work with sincerity, it is not possible to pump water into the storage tank, he observed. Luxettipet Rural Water Supply Assistant Engineer Venkatesh said that efforts were on to complete the works before the deadline.

The stress is on overcoming the ground level problems. By May last week, water will be supplied through taps to at least 20 habitats, he stressed.
