Hanamkonda: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused the ruling TRS of trying to woo Muslims by increasing reservations from four per cent to 12 per cent.

The BJP leaders, led by Warangal Urban district president Rao Padma, staged a protest at the Ekasila Park here on Thursday.

Dubbing the TRS government’s bill hiking quota for Muslims in Telangana, Padma said that the move was aimed at gaining political mileage.

“Reservation on the basis of religion is not possible. Moreover, it’s illegal as the Supreme Court long ago capped the reservation at 50 per cent,” she said, terming the move as unconstitutional.

She said that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao had intentionally introduced the Bill aiming the Muslim vote bank. This apart, KCR is trying to picturise the BJP as anti-Muslim, she added.

Stating that Muslims are aware of the fact that 12 per cent quota is not possible as reservations based on religion are against the judgement of the apex court, she termed the bill as a ploy to hoodwink the minorities.

She said that KCR is worried over BJP’s growing popularity. With his government’s failure to fulfill the election promises such as three acre land to dalits and double bedroom houses, KCR is trying to cover them with new policies, she said.

Former MLA M Dharma Rao said that the TRS will bite the dust in 2019 elections due to its anti-people policies.

The leaders threatened to launch a series of agitations if the government fails to withdraw the Muslim reservation bill.

Senior leaders Sangani Jagadeeshwar, M Vinod, K Ravi, V Srinivas, Marti Lutherk Sathish and Ratnam Satish Shaw were among others present.
