Farmers who parted with lands for SRSP project in a fix
Hundreds of farmers of Vempet village in Metpalli mandal find themselves in a helpless situation for the past four decades and have been facing insults from their sons-in-law as they were not able to transfer the land promised as dowry to their daughters and granddaughters. Moreover, they cannot take loans against them sell them thanks to the tricks of the Sri Ram Sagar Project officials.

Moreover, they cannot take loans against them sell them thanks to the tricks of the Sri Ram Sagar Project officials.
The project sub-canal D-26 passes through Vempet village along with four other sub-canals. Though sub-canals are useful to farmers, it is the attitude of officials that is hurting the farmers.
For example, a farmer of the village owned five acres and parted with one acre for the sub-canal. Then, he should be left with four acres of land. Since the survey number of the land parted by the farmer and the rest of his lands carry the same number, the records showed that all the five acres belonged to the SRSP project sub-canal.
Since the farmer’s name did not figure in the records, he was unable to sell the land or obtain any loan against it.
Some of the intelligent farmers who were close to the officials managed to obtain loans on the land patta, which is in their name, while the rest of the other farmers are in a quandary.
A farmer, Bhumayya, married off his granddaughter promising money to the bridegroom after selling a part of his three-acre land. Even after three years after performing the marriage, Bhumayya failed to fulfill his promise. His son-in-law refused to live with the girl and sent her back to her parents place.
Speaking to The Hans India here on Wednesday, another farmer, Raji Reddy, declared at the time of marriage of his two daughters that he would divide his land equally between the daughters. Since the lands are in the name of SRSP project, they could not be registered in the name of others and he could not change the name in the land patta. As a result, Raji Reddy was humiliated by his sons-in-law.
Taking advantage of the helpless situation of the farmers of the village, some realtors promising to buy the lands are paying some money as advance and putting down the condition that the full amount would be paid only when the land is registered in their name knowing fully well that the land could not be registered.
The revenue officials would not give the NOC and hence the question of registering the land in their names does not arise. The SRSP officials alone should be blamed for the plight of farmers.
Speaking to The Hans India, Jagtiyal District Collector Dr A Sharat said that the problem existed in the village and steps would be initiated to solve it. He said that the Revenue department has been striving to give no-objection certificates (NOC)to such farmers.
