Nizamabad: Students of Kasturba Gandhi Schools in the erstwhile district are facing severe hardships for want of amenities. The crores of rupees that were spent on these schools by the government went down the drain.

Even the food that is supplied to students is not according to the menu. ‘There are 19 schools in Nizamabad and Kamareddy districts. The State government has setup these schools with the aim of providing quality education to the students belonging to the underprivileged families.

The Hans India has brought to light several issues being faced by students of various Kasturba Gandhi Schools. For example, the school at Bhavanipet in Machareddy mandal of Kamareddy has a total of 200 students.

There is only one borewell which is unable to meet the demands of the students. Due to the extra load on the borewell, there are frequent power cuts.

As a result, students are forced to wake up at 3 AM to get ready for going to school. The students haven’t been provided with stationary, uniforms and bedsheets even after a month of the school reopening this year. There are only three living rooms for these 200 students.

The condition of Takriya branch in Kamareddy is even worse. Speaking to The Hans India here on Friday, students expressed fear of walking in the school premise as it becomes slush with rains. They feel insecure as the school has no compound wall.

On the other side, most of the teaching staff in these schools are hired on a contract basis. They said that the government which promised to regularise their jobs, was remaining indifferent to the issue.

They appealed to the government to consider them as regular teachers and hike their salaries accordingly. Women teachers lamented that they were not allowed to go on maternity leaves.

The government should take steps to end the miseries of the teachers and the students in these schools, they said.
