Khammam: The district president of the Congress party, Aitham Satyam, said that Quit India Movement in 1942 orchestrated by the All India Congress was an important phase in India’s struggle for independence.

Remembering the event, the Congress party leaders paid rich tributes to Mahatma Gandhi by garlanding his statue. Aitham Satyam hoisted the tricolour on the occasion here at Congress party office in Khammam on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Satyam said receiving the call from All India Congress all the people living in the country irrespective of castes and religion participated in the Quit India Movement against the British rule with the slogan ‘Do or Die’ from August 9, 1942.

Lakhs of people, including Congress leaders, were arrested by the British across the country. However, some of the leaders like Jayaprakash Narayan, SM Joshi, Aruna Asaf Ali, Ram Manohar Lohia, Achyut Patwardan and Suchetha Kripalani went underground and lead the movement inspiring and motivating many people to participate in the Quit India Movement, he reminded.

Even after imposing many restrictions by British, lakhs of people participated in the movement across the country. Taking inspiration from the movement, the Congress party leaders and the party activists of present generation must strive hard for the well-being of people, he suggested.

Congress leaders Nagandla Deepak Chowdari, Y B Tilak, P Durga Prasad, Kotta Sitha Ramulu, MD Fazal, Ramreddy Charan Reddy, Banothu Balaji Rao Naik, MD Tajuiddin, Ramulu Naik, Venkata Narayana, Bondaiah, Radha Krishna, Musalaiah, Gangadhar and Vinodhamma were present along with others.
