The alarming spread of surrogacy cases in poor India is a glaring national shame. Indian surrogacy has crossed $ 400 million a year. Besides being a ruthless commercial activity, surrogacy is a violation of human rights of the ill-informed, illiterate dalit and tribal women of India. The surrogate mother is considered ‘a mechanical carrier’ and her womb a commodity. The surrogate mother who is hired to give birth to a baby is also deprived of all her parental rights and exploited by the middlemen to the hilt on monetary grounds. It is shockingly saddening that poor India has become the nerve-centre of surrogacy. Throwing all ethical values to the winds, we have allowed foreign nationals into India and made it possible for them to target our poor women as it is relatively much cheaper for them to rent a womb in India than in other countries. Besides, technology is misused just to meet the needs of unscrupulous wealthy men of the West.
The earlier decision taken by the Centre in 2013 allowing import of human embryos for artificial reproduction and thereby giving scope for foreign nationals to bring in human embryos and hire a surrogate womb in India was not only short-sighted and but also unethical. As such the recent decision of the Centre that commercial surrogacy of parents hiring an Indian mother to get a surrogate child will not be allowed is quite welcome. Further, the scope of surrogacy limiting to Indian married couple is also a laudable step. Now that the ’baby factories’ will be closed down, wealthy foreign nationals will no longer target the poor women of India.
