Nehru Zoological Park successfully implemented its reintroduction programme, where wild animals from the zoo are released in their natural habitat. The programme which is implemented every year, kicked off on August 1 this year. Excess population of herbivorous animals from the zoo are transferred to various wildlife sanctuaries and tiger reserves in the state.
Over 8 male and 21 female blackbucks were released at extension four of Mahavir Harina Vanasthali National Park. 13 nilgais (blue bull) were translocated to Kawal Tiger Reserve in Adilabad District. The aim of this programme is to improve the prey population in various wildlife sanctuaries, national parks and tiger reserves. The zoo park has also proposed to shift other animals like sambar (20), nilgai (12), spotted deer (200) and blackbuck (10) to Nagarjuna Sagar Srisailam Tiger Reserve and Kawal Tiger Reserve in the next few weeks.
Panther adopted
An encouraging trend of adopting animals is continuing in the Nehru Zoological Park marking various personal occasions. Priya Dey, Head, Business Development, I.T Global Services, Secunderabad adopted a male panther “Deva” on the occasion of her mother’s (Gita Dey) birthday on Tuesday. She handed over a cheque of Rs 25,000 towards adoption to the zoo authorities.
