On Friday evening, on the auspicious occasion of Nandotsava-the birth celebration of Lord Krishna, the Krishna-Kalinga Cultural Trust organised a dance recital programme titled ‘Krishnashtami’. Two different classical dances, Kuchipudi and Odissi, were performed at the Lord Jagannath Temple in Banjara Hills.

The theme of the performance was based on various mythological episodes of Lord Krishna. It was a special moment for 8-year-old girl, Sampriti Mohanti, who was giving her first solo performance. “This is a special day for me. It was my first solo on Janmashtami and I was excited when everyone clapped after my dance,” said the little girl who started her training from the age of 5 under the tutelage of Vishnu Saran Ajay.

“Today I presented ‘Vasant Pallavi’, an item that depicts the celebration of spring”, explained the dancer who is studying in third standard at the Chirec Public School. “Since she was interested in dance from the very beginning and being an Odiya, I wanted her to learn Odissi. I am happy that she is enjoying this dance form and practicing it every morning out of her own interest,” shared Priyadarshini, the proud mother of the little girl. The devotees and dance connoisseurs lapped up the performances by two other youngsters, Sindhuja and Sampreeti, who are disciples of Dr Yashoda Thakore.

They presented a Kuchipudi recital with three dance items. “It’s been more than 10 years that we are practicing Kuchipudi and performing at various places. But today we are feeling so blessed to have performed at the Jagannath temple on the special occasion of Nandotsava,” shared Sindhuja, who recently finished her graduation in Kuchipudi from the Central University of Hyderabad. She started her dance with the performance of ‘Swagatam Krishna’ followed by ‘Ashtapadi’ which was performed by Sampreeti. Both concluded their recital with a duet performance of Tarangam.
