India is home to around 63 million people suffering from diabetes, it is sad that the country with the world’ second largest population also has the second largest diabetic population. The number is expected to reach around 101.2 million by 2030. The sharp rise in the diabetic number in our country calls for an urgent need to create awareness among people and to create an understanding about the complications associated with its detection in the later stages. It is very essential that clinicians be fully aware of proper treatment of diabetic patients for easier management of the illness.
The 7th edition of the National Insulin Summit was inaugurated in the city under the auspices of Indian College of Physicians and the Association of Physicians of India on August 31. The theme for the two-day NIS was, Concepts in Managing Diabetes: Current, Emerging and Novel. The basic purpose of the summit is to bring together clinical researchers, consultants and other key stakeholders on one single platform and address the concerns relating to diabetes and its management in the country. Doctors and consultants from across India brainstormed and deliberated upon various aspects of diabetes, its treatment and management.
Dr Ashok Kumar Das, National Convener, said, “ Insulin has remained as the only treatment for glucose regulation in type 1 diabetes patients and is often the crucial element in any treatment plan for type 2 diabetes. Forums like these give the medical fraternity an opportunity to come together and share their experiences and understand the latest medical advances on diabetes and insulin management”
Melvin D’Souza, Managing Director, Novo Nordisk India, said, “The success of the National Insulin Summits in a row is testimony of our commitment towards building awareness around diabetes in India. This scientific event is a platform for formulating new guidelines that will act as catalyst for clinicians to understand their patient requirement to offer better treatment.”
Dr A Muruganthan, president, Association of Physicians of India, “To change the future of diabetes in India the summit delivered path breaking concepts on “insulinology” and “diabetology” for effectively managing diabetes in patients. This year we have seven expert groups with eminent faculties who have developed consensus statements on treatment of diabetes in different scenarios that will serve as a guideline for doctors across India.” Various discussions, deliberations and presentations on various aspects of diabetes and insulin management were held. The other topics of discussion were inpatient management of hyperglycemia, insulin initiation, optimisation and continuation in type 2 diabetes and other similar topics.
