On Wednesday, thousands of students from various colleges across the city came together to celebrate the speech given by Swami Vivekanada at the World Parliament of Religions, in 1893 at Chicago. The celebrations were organised by the Swami Vivekananda 150th Jayanthi Utsav Samiti, Hyderabad. As part of the celebrations, the participants took part in a run titled, ‘Run for the Nation’ from Lumbini Park to People’s Plaza, Necklace Road. Originally it was meant to take place from Nizam College Grounds but due to the lack of police permission, the run was organised from Lumbini Park.

The numbers of students who took part in the run amassed into thousands. Apart from students, there were people from different walks of life who participated to show their solidarity with Vivekananda’s speech in Chicago. The run culminated at People’s Plaza, where all the participants were provided with water and other refreshments. They were then addressed by dignitaries like T Tirupati Rao, Former Vice- Chancellor, JNTU; Ele Shyam Kumar, State Chief, RSS; Kishan Reddy, BJP MLA-Amberpet; S M Arif; Swami Jnana Bodhamayananda and a few others.

S M Arif appreciated the efforts taken by the students to celebrate one of India’s greatest orators and his orations. He said, “I am a sports person and the gesture the students have taken to celebrate the speech is a sporting one which makes me proud.” He added, “All sporting events, no matter where they are played, have the same rules. The speech by Swami also represented us Indians.”
Swami Jnana Bodhamayananda, exclaimed, “In 1893, when Vivekananda began his speech he said “Brothers and Sisters of America”- that one statement itself brought him tremendous applause. That’s the power of his speech.” Also present at the event were Bandaru Dattatreya, Former Union Minister. The former minister presented floral garlands to the Statue of Vivekananda at Necklace Road.
